Story

Our roots: OTRS

OTRS specialist of the first hour

Stefan Rother, founder and managing director of Tother OSS is an OTRS specialist of the first hour. In 2004 he was the first employee of then OTRS GmbH (today's OTRS AG), and managed their Support and internal IT organisation for years. In 2011 he left and founded his own company Rother OSS in order to put greater emphasis on the open source spirit again.

OTRS services with Open Source Focus

Up until 2019 Rother OSS concentrated on providing Business Services for the free Open Source versions of OTRS – OTRS Free, and later ((OTRS)) Community Edition. Since the first day, we have been placing the open source idea center-stage: Rother OSS support customers get all add-ons from our porfolio free of charge. We focus on strong relationships and a community that all parties involved benefit from instead of profit maximisation.

Reacting to the changed release strategy of OTRS AG and the delay in making new versions of ((OTRS)) Community Edition available freely, we decided to build our own open source ticket system OTOBO based on version 6 of the tried and tested system in 2019.

Open source ticket system OTOBO

In January 2020 Rother OSS presented their own fork OTOBO Helpdesk. OTOBO stands for Open Ticket system. Ours – meaning all of us. Yours. The Community's. Based on ((OTRS)) Community Edition.

Our aim: To provide an open source ticket system that is truly free, coming with strong functionality AND a great look. And we want to give back to the community.

OTOBO is open source software. From people for people. Putting the user center-stage.

Tried and tested foundation – promising additions

OTOBO is based on ((OTRS)) Community Edition. This solid foundation is being complemented by our know-how from 15 years of project work around OTRS and ((OTRS)) Community Edition. Various business features that we have developed for our customers since 2011. And a complete re-conception of the customer interface, carried out in close collaboration with the Munich UI/UX experts of SANMIGUEL brand and design agency.

Business concept

As OTOBO is free of charge, we have to earn our money with something different, but close: We go on focusing on providing Business Services – that is Consulting and Training, individual Development, as well as Support and Hosting – all around ((OTRS)) Community Edition and our own Open Source Helpdesk OTOBO. Feature add-ons developed for customers that might be interesting for the community will be integrated into OTOBO standard. We're confident that this way all of us will profit.

With OTOBO we want to provide an open source ticket system with strong functionality AND a great look at last.

And build a strong community again.

For the redesign of OTOBO we called in reinforcements. The UI/UX experts of Munich design and brand agency SANMIGUEL are our partners for all things design and graphical conceptions. In a first step they completely redesigned the customer portal. And thus built the foundation for the good code to show a nice face to the outside.
